Winter Solstice

Tomorrow is the first day of Winter, also known as the Winter Solstice. It is also the shortest day of the year, which means that starting on December 22nd, each day will start to get longer.

Now the first day of Winter might not be such a big deal but for the fact that it means we have 3 months of Winter left. That means that despite the horrible weather we've already experienced, we've got a hell of a lot more to come.

I've been done with Winter since the day after the first snow just about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

And that's where my challenge comes from: How will I ever survive the next 3 months?

Discuss.

  1. Seriously it's -6 degrees right now and the wind chill is -31 degrees! That means that when you walk outside, your body THINKS it's -31 degrees, NOT the balmy -6!

It's just too damn early to be so freekin' cold! If it's like this NOW what's gonna happen to me in January?????

  2. This should also help out on cold days (just don't let Ross know about it. He might whack it out of your hand):

    Cafe De Flore's Hot Chocolate
7oz bitterswet chocolate, broken into small pieces
    2 cups cold milk
2/3 cups heavy cream (aka whipping cream)
    1 tsp vanilla extract

    Double Boiler Directions:
    1. Put the chocolate and 1/4 cup of cod milk in a double boiler over medium heat and cook until the chocolate is melted, stirring with a wooden spoon.

    2. Add the rest of the milk and the cream and the vanilla extract and heat, stirring constantly, until hot and fully blended.

    Saucepan Directions
    1. Put the chocolate and 1/2 cup of the milk in a saucepan, cover and cook over low heat until the chocolate has softened, about 3 minutes. The milk must never be allowed to boil. Remove from the heat and whip with a whisk until smooth.

    2. Add the remaining milk and the cream and vanilla extract and cook over medium heat, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon, until hot and fully blended.

The recipe is from Paris Cafe Cook Book by Daniel Young

  3. You know what, you should use bittersweet chocolate and cold milk. Do not use cod milk. That would be gross. D'oh!
